As a junior, he participated in the elite combo division of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, and as a senior was enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division for jazz. He received the 2010 Stanford Jazz Workshop Outstanding Soloist Award and the 2010 ASCAP Outstanding Young Jazz Composer Award.
